Abstract
Poly (styrene-N-isopropylacrylamide) nanoparticles with different sizes were prepared by one step surfactant-free emulsion polymerization using ammonium persulfate as initiator, with a constant molar ratio of monomers. The effect of the dosage of the monomers on the size of the nanoparticles was studied. Then the photonic crystals films with different colors were prepared by simple vertical deposition method. Results indicated that the nanoparticles had an obvious core shell structure and good monodispersity. There was a linear relationship between nanoparticles sizes and the dosage of the monomers. The nanoparticles of the photonic crystals films were in a close- packed face-centered cubic arrangement, and the thickness of the films was about 8 μm. The measured stopbands of the photonic crystal films were mostly identical to the theoretical calculations, and it had a linear relationship with the size of the nanoparticles. When the total mole of monomers were 20,25,30,35 mmol, the corresponding colors of the films were bluish violet, bluish green, yellow-green and jacinth, respectively.
