Effect of Oxidation Degree of Oxidized Sodium Alginate on Properties of Sodium Alginate/Gelatin(semi) IPNs Crosslinked with Oxidized Sodium Alginate

    • Oxidized sodium alginate(OSA) with different oxidation degrees was successfully synthesized using sodium alginate(SA) as material and sodium periodate(SP) as oxidant by adjusting molar ratio of SA to SP and oxidation time. Sodium alginate/gelatin (semi) interpenetrating polymer networks (SA/Ge (semi) IPNs) were prepared using OSA as crosslinking agent. The possible crosslinking mechanism and the formation of (semi) IPNs structure were speculated according to the FT-IR results and the preparation process. Effects of the oxidation degrees of OSA on the mechanical properties and crosslinking degrees of (semi) IPNs were studied in detail. Results indicated that the OSA with specific oxidation degree could be prepared by controlling the molar ratio of SA to SP. With the increasing of oxidation degrees of OSA, the tensile strength of (semi) INP increased at first, and then decreased, and the crosslinking degrees increased.
