UV Polymerization and Performance of Acrylic Acid-Starch-Kaolin SaltResistant Superabsorbent Resin

    • A saltresistant superwaterabsorbing resin was synthesized from acrylic acid (AA), soluble starch(CTS) and kaolin (KL) with ɑ,ɑ'-azodiisobutyramidine dihydrochloride as the initiator through ultraviolet photopolymerization. The effect of polymerization variables, including AA neutralization degree, irradiation time, content of initiator, soluble starch and kaolin, on water absorbency were studied. The swelling rate in distilled water, the swelling behavior in aqueous solutions with various pH value and various ionic strengths were also investigated. The resin was characterized by FT-IR. Results show that water absorptions of the resin in distilled water and in NaCl solution(w=0.9%) could reach 1 800 g/g and 98 g/g, respectively.
